It has taken one of my younger siblings, disturbed the lives of two others, annoyed my dad in his old age, and, over the years, been a rude intruder in the lives of more than a few of my friends and acquaintances.
So, a couple of years ago after a scary-enough bout with a benign, non-invasive episode of bladder cancer, I went researching to see how I might never have a recurrence. These things are certainly not totally in my control. I understand that. But, I have also learned that for most of us, there are many relatively simple things with diet and lifestyle that we can do to minimize our susceptibility to illnesses of all sorts. I wanted to get out in front of this cancer thing and make sure that I wasn’t making myself an easy target for its return.
As I researched, I learned that retention of heavy metals like lead and mercury are thought to be at least one factor in cancers affecting the lower body – bladder, as in my case and my dad’s, and also testicle, kidney, and prostrate, as in my brothers’ cases. The argument made sense – I grew up in a house which was built in 1905 – who knows how much lead there was in pipes, paint, and other elements in that house? Over the years I have also had many mercury tooth fillings, and some of the metal easily may have “leaked” and gone south, landing in my bladder and looking for ways to cause trouble.
Making a long story short, I learned that the fresh water algae, such as Spirulina, Chlorella, and Blue-Green Algae, are all very fine detoxifiers, especially with heavy metals.
They all also support healthy hormonal and immune system function, promote skin and cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and encourage weight loss. Good resume`s, all. They are all highly concentrated with chlorophyll, which explains the rich, dark green color, as well as many of their health benefits
While they have similar nutrient profiles and health benefits to match, it is Chlorella that is said to be the most effective cancer-fighter and metal binder. A 1-ounce (3 Tbs) serving contains about 16g protein, hefty amounts of vitamins A, B2, and B3, Iron, Magnesium, and Zinc. It is ranked one of the top 10 health foods in the world, actually containing more nutrient density per gram than other greens, including kale, spinach, and broccoli, whose health benefits have been widely published and praised in recent years.
Let’s look at 3 ways that Chlorella can help avoid cancers.
1. Chlorella Detoxifies Our Bodies. It wraps itself around even stubborn toxins residing in our bodies, such as lead, cadmium, mercury and uranium, and keeps them from becoming reabsorbed. Regular consumption of chlorella can even help keep heavy metals from accumulating in our bodies’ soft tissues and organs in the first place.
2. Chlorella Fights Cancer. Even though we all have cancer cells that develop in us at some time, a properly functioning immune system has the ability to attack and destroy these cells before they have the chance to create cancer. Chlorella, taken as a regular preemptive, strengthens the immune system, so our bodies can do their job. As it removes heavy metals and toxins from our body, we are less likely to get environmentally based cancers. Chlorella also enhances the action of T cells helping to fight new abnormal cells.
3. Chlorella Detoxifies Radiation and Chemotherapy. These are the two most common forms of cancer treatment today, and it is common knowledge how much toll they make on the human body as they attempt to kill cancer cells. Chlorella’s high levels of chlorophyll have been shown to protect the body against ultraviolet radiation treatments while removing radioactive particles from the body. When natural cancer treatments are employed, Chlorella can help to fight those side effects as well.
There May Be Some Side Effects
Chlorella is a strong food. Some people have some symptoms including swelling of the face or tongue, sensitivity to sunlight, digestive upset, acne, fatigue, lethargy, headaches, vertigo, and shaking. Most of these side effects are present in any detoxification program. If any of them occur, back off a bit, and then go back at it gradually. If symptoms persist, (a rarity, for sure), you may have better luck with its cousin spirulina, also a good de-toxifier/cancer-fighter.
How To Consume It.
Chlorella is readily available in health food stores and in grocery chains that have a “health” section. I most often see it as tablets (big ones), but you may find it as a powder. Taken as a powder, be forewarned that it has a very strong flavor (personality!). Start with 1/2 tsp and you may wish to mask it some by adding it to a green smoothie with some fruit. 3-6 tablets with 8 oz. of water one to three times a day will help you experience the many benefits of chlorella. I chew, as recommended, 3 tablets a day. (Tablets may vary in size depending on the company.) Other than temporary green teeth and toothbrush, I have experienced no issues.
Give it a try, especially if you worry about cancer as I do, or have a history of cancer in your family. Of course, we all live in the presence of thousands of environmental toxins these days, and Chlorella can be a fine shield against their bad effects, as well as provide many other health benefits.
